American mezzo-soprano Alma Neuhaus, praised for a voice “that is as velvety as it is voluminous” (Salzburger Nachrichten), is currently based in Vienna as a member of the Ensemble at the Wiener Staatsoper.
2024/25 season highlights included Nicklausse (Les Contes d’Hoffmann), Page (Salome), and Zweite Dame in a new production of Die Zauberflöte. She made her debut with the Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra, and presented a solo concert with the Bethlehem Music Series in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In May, 2025, Alma was named the first ever recipient of the Young Artist Career Development Grant from the Opera Verace Foundation, recognizing her “exceptional vocal artistry and compelling stage presence.” The 2025/26 season will include role debuts such as Dorabella (Così fan tutte), Hänsel (Hänsel und Gretel), and Annio (La Clemenza di Tito). In the 2023/24 season, Alma performed roles including Zweite Magd (Daphne), Flora (La Traviata), Mercédès (Carmen), Cherubino (Le Nozze di Figaro), and Rosina (Barbier für Kinder). She also made her Paris debut as Zerlina (Don Giovanni) at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées. She made her Wiener Staatsoper house debut in 2022/23 as Die Schleppträgerin in Elektra, with other roles that season including Tisbe (La Cenerentola), Soeur Mathilde (Dialogues does Carmélites), Waltraute (Die Walküre), Wellgunde (Das Rheingold), and Kate Pinkerton (Madama Butterfly).

Alma joined the Salzburger Festspiele as a member of the 2022 Young Singer’s Project, performing as Seconda Cercatrice in Il Trittico: Suor Angelica and as a Flower Maiden in Parsifal with the Wiener Philharmoniker. She was then selected to sing in the 2023 SWR Junge Opernstars Concerts with the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie. She was named the Liederkranz Foundation Prize winner in the 2021 Gerda Lissner Lieder/Song Competition and was a finalist in the 2022 Neue Stimmen Competition in Gütersloh, Germany. Other engagements include New York performances with Les Arts Florissants as Filide in Handel’s Aminta e Filide under the direction of William Christie.

Alma Neuhaus as Cherubino in Le Nozze di Figaro
Originally from Minneapolis, Minnesota, Alma holds a Masters degree from The Juilliard School where she performed as Jenny Reefer/Anna Hope at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in the MetLiveArts production of The Mother of Us All, a collaboration with The Juilliard School and the New York Philharmonic. She made her role debut as Arcane in Handel’s Teseo with Juilliard Opera and performed with Lincoln Center Restart Stages, including concerts at Alice Tully Hall and Damrosch Park. She served as a Vocal Fellow for the Music Academy of the West in 2020 and 2021, performing as Sandman in the video production of Hänsel und Gretel, in the film Mirrorflores: Cinematic Opera, and in concerts at the Lobero Theater and Granada Theater.
In her home state, Alma joined the Bach Roots Festival in the Twin Cities in 2021, performing as an Alto Soloist in JS Bach’s BWV 97: In allen meinen Taten, BWV 243: Magnificat in D, and Kuhnau’s Magnificat in C. She was also a featured soloist with The Singers - Minnesota Choral Artists in John Corigliano’s Fern Hill on the 2021 album Come to the Woods.
