American mezzo-soprano Alma Neuhaus, praised for a voice “that is as velvety as it is voluminous” (Salzburger Nachrichten), is currently based in Vienna as a member of the Opernstudio at the Wiener Staatsoper. She made her house debut in 2023 as Die Schleppträgerin in Elektra, with other role debuts including Tisbe (La Cenerentola), Soeur Mathilde (Dialogues does Carmélites), Waltraute (Die Walküre), Wellgunde (Das Rheingold), and Kate Pinkerton (Madama Butterfly).

In the 2023/24 season, Alma will debut roles including Zweite Magd (Daphne), Flora (La Traviata), Mercédès (Carmen), and Rosina (Barbier für Kinder). She will also make her Paris debut as Zerlina (Don Giovanni) at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées.

Alma joined the Salzburger Festspiele as a member of the 2022 Young Singer’s Project, performing as Seconda Cercatrice in Il Trittico: Suor Angelica and as a Flower Maiden in Parsifal with the Wiener Philharmoniker. She was then selected to sing in the 2023 SWR Junge Opernstars Concerts with the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie. She was named the Liederkranz Foundation Prize winner in the 2021 Gerda Lissner Lieder/Song Competition and was a finalist in the 2022 Neue Stimmen Competition in Gütersloh, Germany. She performed with Les Arts Florissants as Filide in Handel’s Aminta e Filide under the direction of William Christie and was listed in the The Gerda Lissner Foundation International Vocal Competition Winners Concert on the stage of Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall.

Originally from Minneapolis, Minnesota, Alma holds a Masters degree from The Juilliard School where she performed as Jenny Reefer/Anna Hope at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in the MetLiveArts production of The Mother of Us All, a collaboration with The Juilliard School and the New York Philharmonic. She made her role debut as Arcane in Handel’s Teseo with Juilliard Opera and performed with Lincoln Center Restart Stages, including concerts at Alice Tully Hall and Damrosch Park with works by Grieg, Handel, and JS Bach. She served as a Vocal Fellow for the Music Academy of the West in 2020 and 2021, performing as Sandman in the video production of Hänsel und Gretel, in the film Mirrorflores: Cinematic Opera, and in concerts at the Lobero Theater and Granada Theater.

In her home state, Alma joined the Bach Roots Festival in the Twin Cities in 2021, performing as an Alto Soloist in JS Bach’s BWV 97: In allen meinen Taten, BWV 243: Magnificat in D, and Kuhnau’s Magnificat in C. She was also a featured soloist with The Singers - Minnesota Choral Artists in John Corigliano’s Fern Hill on the 2021 album Come to the Woods.
